iPads at the Library: Before you Borrow

This guide is intended to provide VCC students and employees with information about borrowing and using iPads.

Switching on

Turning the iPad on - Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Turning the iPad off - Hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds and then drag the red slider across the screen when it appears.

Locking the iPad- Press the Sleep/Wake button.

Unlocking the  iPad - Press the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button, then drag the slider.

Interacting with the iPad

Tap - Tap lightly on icons or buttons on the iPad screen to open or start them.

Scroll - Press down with your finger on the object you want to move on the screen and then pull your finger across the screen.  You can use this gesture to scroll down Web pages and documents.

Swipe - Move your finger quickly across the screen to switch between screens or pages of an e-book.

Pinch - Pinch your thumb and index finger together while pressing down on the screen to shrink the page.  Press down on the screen and move your thumb and index finger apar to enlarge the page.

What is an "app"?

Apps are programs designed for a specific task or purpose, such as reading eBooks, taking notes or playing a game.

The Library iPads come pre-loaded with a selection of apps. On the iPad homepage, tap on the App Store icon to download more apps.

Don't forget to create an Apple ID!  You will need an Apple ID to download apps, even free ones.  Sign up here to create an Apple ID.
