MLA Citation Style 9th edition: Welcome

Why Cite?

There are two primary reasons to cite your sources:

  1. To acknowledge and give credit when using other people's ideas and work.
  2. To create a verifiable route for your reader to find those sources.

Where do I Cite?

Citations appear in two parts

  1. Within your paper
    ("in-text" or "parenthetical" citations)
  2. On the Works Cited page
(at the end of your paper)

MLA is a citation style developed by the Modern Language Association, and it is most commonly used in the arts and humanities. MLA style consists of two parts:

  • short in-text citations (parenthetical) combined with
  • a works cited list containing the full citation details.

Cite everything that you quote, paraphrase or summarize.
